The California State Fair and Expo
By Gail Leino

Fair goers at the California Fair in Sacramento can proudly state that they ‘picked a wiener at the California State Fair’ when they attend and bet on the Dachshund Derby. These cute little wiener dogs have been running in an annual race at the fair for seven years. The races are held daily at the Budweiser Grandstand, which is the same place where regular horse races are held throughout the year. So these little dogs will be running on the field of larger dreams while Dachshund fans cheer them on.

The mascot of the fair is Poppy the Bear. He’s a lovable and friendly golden bear, that visitors just might see wandering around the grounds. Those with kids can sign them up for the Poppy Pals Club and have them wear their name badge at the fair in order to receive special treatment.

Much of the fair is geared towards the unique and active lifestyle of today’s Californians. You’ll find competitions are slightly different than the normal exhibits. The ‘Make it at the Fair’ competition is a cook off challenge where contestants must prepare pre-selected recipes for the judges in front of a crowd of fair goers.

Visitors can also find several Commercial competitions involving the variety of Commercial businesses in California. Wineries in the state bring their best wines to the State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, considered the most prestigious competition in North America, to be judged.

New Technologies are also very important to the state and as such visitors can find exhibits from outstanding students and instructors in the areas of Architectural Drafting, Mechanical Drafting, Electronics, Graphic Arts, and Photography. Be sure to check out the ‘Lite Bright and Electric Design’ youth division for examples of the digital arts.

Visitors can find lots of lodging in the area because the fair is in the heart of Sacramento. Many of the hotels offer specials and packages for eager fair goers. You’ll be able to find many restaurants and shopping centers, plenty of local California entertainment near the fair once you tire yourself out.
