Los Angeles: All that Glitters Might be Gold

Los Angeles is one of the most diverse, dynamic cities in the world, and one of the largest being over 1000 square miles. It has many attractive tourist destinations - here are ten most recommended. In the Los Angeles area, the golden sand of the beaches, the gold of the Academy Awards, and the "gold" brought in by the many tourists means that if it glitters it could very well be gold.

California Science Center. This is a large museum offering hundreds of interactive exhibits and guided tours. It also has the only IMAX theatre in the city, showing science related movies. Free Admission.

Los Angeles Museum of Art. This museum is one of the best museums in the world. It has a very impressive art collection and many ancient artifacts, some as old as 6000 BC.

La Brea Tar Pits. This is a vast tar pit into which ancient creatures such as dinosaurs, were sucked and preserved as fossils. It has been featured in numerous motion pictures such as the "Last Action Hero" with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Griffith Observatory. This is a premier planetarium with a great laser show.

Getty Center. This fine museum housed in a beautiful, modern building, has an extensive art collection, primarily from the United States and Europe. It has Renaissance art, works by Rembrandt, and Italian manuscripts from the Middle Ages.

Watts Tower. This unique landmark is a set of sculptures created by Simon Rodia from 1921 to 1954. These intricate sculptures made of spare parts, metal pieces and even seashells are quite fascinating.

Museum of Tolerance. This museum is dedicated to educating people about racism. It focuses mainly on the holocaust of WWII.

Olivera Street. This is a Mexican enclave spanning several city blocks. If offers Mexican restaurants, wares, novelties, and fresh seafood.

California African American Museum. This museum exhibits a large collection of art and sculpture highlighting the rich African American culture.

Echo Park. This park in central Los Angeles was designed by Joseph Henry Tomlinson in the late 1800's and modeled after a famous English garden. Be sure to rent a paddleboat and cruise the large lake in its center.
