Pacific Grove California History
By John Saras

Pacific Grove is a beautiful and charming coastal town in Monterey County, California, with a population of 15,522 (as of the 2000 census). Pacific Grove shares borders with the Monterey Bay, City of Monterey, Pacific Ocean, and the Del Monte Forest. Pacific Grove offers fresh sea air, breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and plenty of recreational activities. It's neighbors on the Monterey Peninsula are Pebble Beach and Monterey, home of the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Many beautiful Victorian houses can be found in Pacific Grove, in fact Pacific Grove has the highest number of Victorian houses per capita than any other city in America. Many of these homes have been converted into romantic bed and breakfast inns or charming restaurants.

In Pacific Grove there is a wonderful award-winning natural history museum, An 18-hole golf course, and is home to the oldest operating lighthouse of the west coast, called Point Pinos Lighthouse. One of the most popular attractions in Pacific Grove is the amazing population of Monarch Butterflies. Nicknamed "Butterfly town USA" Pacific Grove is home to one of the most popularl Monarch butterfly populations in California. Each year these butterflies flock to Pacific Grove to nest in the trees each spring. Pacific Grove citizens act as strong protectors of Monarchs, who migrate North in March.

The "Butterfly Trees" were first described in 1850, and have made Pacific Grove the best known winter home of monarchs that fly from as far as 2,000 miles away to escape harsh winter weather. The city has long called Butterfly Town, U.S.A., and for the past 66 years the winter visitors are dressed in butterfly costumes parading through town.

Pacific Grove History The Rumsen Ohlone tribe inhabited the area first now known as Pacific Grove. This tribe survived with hunting, fishing and gathering from the rich Monterey Peninsula environment.

Pacific Grove California had its beginning in the year 1875 as a summer Methodist camp. Many other people came to Pacific Grove later to rest and relax because of the fresh sea air and beautiful surroundings. The first camp organized meeting was held in Pacific Grove in June 1879.

In the year 1889 the Pacific Grove became an official city.

Pacific Grove became a favorite spot for many artists in the 1890s and subsequent period. Artists from Europe and the United States were seeking a naturally beautiful place and Pacific Grove was a magnet for them. William Adam was an English painter who first moved to Monterey California and permanently stayed there. In the year 1906 the German painter Eugen Neuhaus moved to Pacific Grove with his bride.

Pacific Grove and the surrounding areas of the Monterey Peninsula have become even more well-known through the works of nobel-prize winning author John Steinbeck. Steinbeck enjoyed many childhood memories in Pacific Grove and on the Monterey Peninsula, and he uses these locations in his works like Tortilla Flat and Grapes of Wrath.

Pacific Grove is now a favorite tourist destination. Many people come to the Monterey Peninsula for Pebble Beach golf course, Carmel shopping, Monterey's famous Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay aquarium. All of these locations can be found within 10-20 minutes from Pacific Grove.
