Santa Clarita - Get That Small Town Feeling in Santa Clarita and Avoid the Crowds in Los Angeles
By Connie Ragen Green

Santa Clarita is located just north of Los Angeles, in the beautiful region just north of the San Fernando Valley. It is becoming a popular place for visitors to southern California to stay and play. If you are looking for that small town feeling, while being just a half an hour from Los Angeles, then this is the place for you.

If you have children of any age, Santa Clarita offers activities that will thrill and delight them. Six Flags Magic Mountain put this city on the map more than twenty years ago, and continues to be an adventure park for kids of all ages. There are roller coasters, water rides, and even an area for younger children. During the summer there are themed shows, featuring entertainers from throughout the area, including some from world famous California Institute of the Arts, located just three miles away in the Valencia section of our city. Six Flags also has Hurricane Harbor, a complete water park that is the perfect way to spend a hot summer day.

Santa Clarita is also home to the Performing Arts Center at the College of the Canyons. There is both local and professional entertainment year around, and during the past year we enjoyed Wayne Newton, Manhattan Transfer, and the work of our local talent in a production of Beauty and the Beast.

Old Town Newhall is yet another section of this city that must not be missed while you are visiting. You can take a leisurely walk down Main Street and see the Cowboy Walk of Fame, where there are stars on the sidewalk for the many people who made movies and television shows here, beginning with William S. Hart and Gene Autry more than sixty years ago. Every Spring Newhall holds it Cowboy Festival, with music, dancing and many other activities for both young and old. You can visit Hart Museum and see the home that Hart built back in the 1920's. There are even buffalo roaming the grounds, the descendants of the buffalo given to William S. Hart by Walt Disney, during the 1960's.Finally, if you enjoy shopping and dining, this city offers some of the best. There is the Valencia Town Mall, as well as many smaller, boutique style stores. The restaurants offer a variety of styles, from French Cuisine and Italian to local fare.

You will find Santa Clarita to be one of the most enjoyable places to visit and relax, and if you still have time and energy you can drive south for about thirty minutes and visit Los Angeles.
